How to teach main idea & supporting details
The main idea is what a text is mostly about — not one small detail. Teach students to test candidate ideas against the whole passage: an idea that only covers the beginning, or only one character, is a detail, not the main idea.
Common miscue: students pick the first interesting fact. Fix it by asking, “Does this cover the WHOLE passage?”
