How to teach making inferences
An inference combines a clue from the text (or illustration) with what the reader already knows to figure out something the author didn't say directly. It is the difference between reading the words and understanding the story.
Common miscue: wild guesses with no evidence. Fix it with the sentence frame “I think ___ because the clue shows ___ and I know ___.”
